I Need Some Advice, Squids: Monetization of a Lens

Posted by: icjackson In: Monetization

Hey gang,

If you’re reading this, I’d like to start by thanking you for taking the time to see if you could help me. I’ve got an interesting problem with a lens, and I need some advice from a bigger, more experienced squid.

My lens, Our Deepest Fear – Inspirational Poem by Marianne Williamson, has been in existence for 7 days, and so far it has gotten nearly 70 hits, most of which are coming from search engines. For a newbie, I think that’s pretty cool :-)

The problem is that there are no clickouts! NONE! When you visit the lens, you will see the nature of my problem. Most people searching for the poem/passage are looking for an accurate version of the passage and that’s it. Since Marianne Williamson isn’t selling any paraphernalia on this poem/passage other than her book, I don’t really know what to do on the monetization end above and beyond what I’m doing.

But if this lens gets most of it’s traffic from Google and it has the potential to get consistent visitation, I need to be able to make SOMETHING off of it!

If you know what I can do to monetize this lens without making it sleazy, PLEASE tell me – I’m not getting it yet :-(

Thanks in advance for your help,

I.C. Jackson

I’m not sure what to do as far as monetization, but congratulations on getting so many hits from the search engines. That’s not bad at all for a start.

Definitely you don’t want to make it sleazy – here’s a nice poem – oh wait – why not buy a DVD…. No – keep it relevant.

How about adding some Amazon links to poetry books, or does the author have any other works, or is there something similar that you could add links for?

Hopefully some good ideas will come to you…
Good Luck
Tony

I think you have made a solid lens and have made good use of the monetary modules. Since the lens is only 7 days old I think you need to give it some time. 70 hits is good but it may take 150 before someone makes a purchase. Be patient. Make another lens. :)

Hi, I am afraid I cannot help you but am interested in any suggestions others might have.

My lens, Your Life Sentence ~~ Six-Word Memoirs or Quotations is doing very nicely with Google visits and has only one possibility for making money in the purchase of the original book.

I do not think I would add anything else to it in a money-making sense as it would take away from the quality of the lens. Maybe some lenses have to just be beautiful and not about making money. Perhaps though, there is value in the traffic that visits them and then, maybe, some of your other lenses.

Thanks everybody for the advice.

Very encouraging and enlightening…

I appreciate what you have said, and will simply move on and just watch the lens to see what happens.

Have a good one, guys :-)

I made two lenses which may help you out:

http://www.squidoo.com/EelKatSquidooSecrets

http://www.squidoo.com/SalesOnSquidoo

Those tell you what I do and how I do it, so you can learn from me without having to make all the same mistakes I made along the way.

I have 330 lenses and my monthly payouts directly from Squidoo current average $95, with about half of that coming from the Google ad pay. What that means is that Amazon/eBay sales are bringing in an average of .02c per lens per month!

Most of the money I make off of my lenses comes from sales off Zazzle, each shop bringing in $25 – $75 per month (keeping in mind that I have over 4,000 products spread out across 4 Zazzle shops and more than 40 lenses devoted totally to my Zazzle products, plus links to at least one Zazzle product on nearly every single lens).

Also, I was on Squidoo 6 months before I started seeing any income from it at all. Basically it takes a few months before you start seeing much effect from Squidoo, so the best thing is too just keep building more and more lenses.

It sounds like you are getting pretty good traffic so, just keep building good lenses and building up a following. People who read one lens, usually look for a second and third lens to read, and it through one reader moving from lens to lens that will get you better click outs.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
